Cultural Narrative: 

Before his conversion to Christianity his Anishinabe name was Ash-A-Tah-Au-Qua-Beh. Wheaton converted to Christianity when he was a young man and attended seminary school at Albion College before returning to his home community in Saginaw, Michigan to be a preacher. This photograph was taken by Harlan Smith on his visit to Saginaw in 1894. Wheaton shared some traditional stories with Smith (included in related content) on this visit.
