Description:

Chief O-ge-ma-ke-ga-to’s remains have been disinterred and a reminiscence was given. He was well known for his intellect, bravery, and oratory skills and was elected chief for 30 consecutive years. He once left a group of lawyers speechless after a speech he gave regarding questions affecting the Indian’s welfare. There are also many stories about his bravery, including a time where he was stabbed in the side while breaking up an argument and a piece of his liver fell out. One afternoon while he was recovering in the hospital and in the presence of witnesses, O-ge-ma-ke-ga-to took his knife, sliced off part of his liver, threw it on the fire to cook, and ate it. He served as leader of the Chippewa until his death in 1839 or 1840.
